Nurturing a fledgling nonprofit takes dedication, focus, and maybe even a few miracles. In this audio lectre, Van Jones, executive director of the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, opens the Craigslist Foundation Bay Area Boot Camp with a compelling look at life in the nonprofit sector, sharing his own story and some key tips for making a real difference. Collaboration, communication, tenacity, integrity, and irrational exuberance are just a few of the qualities needed to grow a good idea into a sustainable force for social progress, he says.

Van Jones is the founder and National Executive Director of the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights (EBC). Headquartered in Oakland, Calif., EBC is a national organization that challenges human rights abuses in the U.S. criminal justice system. Born in rural west Tennessee in 1968, Jones is a 1990 graduate of the University of Tennessee at Martin and a 1993 graduate of the Yale Law School. He is helping to lead a national fight for alternatives to the U.S. incarceration industry, and has been a pioneer in challenging police abuse and the over-incarceration of young people. He has worked as a professional journalist, independent publisher, cartoonist, columnist, and national spokesperson, as well. Upon graduating from law school, Jones joined the board of Media Alliance in San Francisco, helping to revive that organization. He was the founding board president of We Interrupt This Message, a nonprofit organization that helps low-income people and people of color get more fair coverage from the mainstream media.
