Fostering Effective Nonprofit-Corporate Relations

Mutual distrust and misperceptions often prevent nonprofits from working with corporations. But when organizations work together in good faith, they can achieve their objectives in ways they could not have done alone. In this panel discussion from the 2007 Nonprofit Boot Camp, participants discuss the importance of nonprofit-corporate partnerships, the various types of relationships that are possible, and the benefits and challenges of such partnerships. Drawing on practical experience, they talk about how to start and maintain such collaborations by understanding what the partner organization's needs and goals are. Finally, they answer questions on several subjects, including how to approach and pitch a collaboration, whether to make multiple proposals, how to get corporations to become socially responsible, and how to handle controversial projects.

Susan Rae Ross has more than 20 years of experience working in Africa, Asia, and Latin America managing diverse collaborative efforts among many stakeholders. She is currently writing a book on NGO-corporate partnerships.

Jim Pitofsky is the executive director of Hands On Bay Area. He served in executive positions with the National Youth Leadership Council, Echoing Green Foundation, SeaChange, Social Enterprise Alliance, NAPE, and the National and Community Service Coalition. Pitofsky has also advised or partnered with corporate CEOs, senior staff, and directors of corporate foundations. He has trained hundreds of corporate directors on how to improve their giving and corporate volunteerism, and how to use service as a strategy for employee leadership development.

Randy Chun is regional vice president for the Wells Fargo Foundation. He manages contribution programs from Central California to the San Francisco Bay Area. Chun’s primary focus area is economic development, including affordable housing, small business technical assistance, and workforce development. Prior to his current assignment, he managed Wells Fargo Foundation projects in Oregon, Washington State, Idaho, Utah, and New Mexico.
