Amory Lovins focuses the discussion of energy efficiency in industry on overall benefits versus capital costs. The most significant overall benefits are gained by understanding the flows and friction of the entire system. Small, incremental improvements may appear cost efficient, but typically will fail to achieve the types of supplement cost and efficiency savings gained if you look at everything.

Do you need excess flow? Is their unnecessary friction caused by pipe layout? Are pumps sized appropriately? Are monitoring systems and controls best in class? Eliminate incrementalism and build the system properly to gain the 20-30 additional benefits that result from a system that is artfully designed and assembled.
