In the third and final session on Energy Efficiency in Industry, Amory Lovins, Chairman and Chief Scientist of the Rocky Mountain Institute, discusses two case studies to demonstrate the value of the whole system optimization approach to energy efficiency. To emphasize his point he uses the metaphor of eating an Atlantic lobster. There are the obvious opportunities in the big chunks of meat in the body and claws, but there are valuable morsels hidden away in other areas that need to be discovered.

The case studies include an industrial retrofit of a plant converting liquid methane into liquefied natural gas, and the development of a new data center. Both are unique examples, but both show how a company must be willing to put in the time and effort to examine beyond the obvious. The hidden savings and benefits are found by examining the not so obvious areas of a system design and integration. As in the case of the lobster, "don't leave anything on the table." This is part three of a three-part presentation on “Energy Efficiency in Industry”. It is also the second in a series of five talks on Energy Efficiency by Amory Lovins and is brought to you by MAP.
