How do we define feminism?  How do the struggles of women relate to racism and classism?  Gloria Steinem, a leader of the women's movement since the 1960's, discusses answers to these and other challenging questions about the progress of feminism in this Oxonian Society interactive forum.

"The only way you get a muscle is to exercise it."  Steinem shares anecdotes about the early days of her political awakening in the 1960's, talking about her brief stint as a Playboy bunny, and how the reality is far different from the image.  She explains how effective political activism has become more complex in the past 40 years, and how patriarchy is key to the suppression of all human rights, not just gender justice.

Steinem brings her valuable history and experience to this discussion about the changing roles of women in society.  But she also shows her sense of humor and humility as she fields a variety of questions personal and political.  "You turned out terrific!" she responds to an audience member who thanks her for her inspiration.

Steinem always comes back to the principal that every person has a unique contribution to offer the progress of feminism.  "Revolutions are like houses, you have to build them from the bottom up."  She ends the discussion with a call to action to the people in the room to summon the courage to commit one outrageous act to promote simple justice within the next 24 hours.  Not only will it make the world a better place, it will be your joyful springboard to continued activism.
