PATH (Program for Appropriate Technology and Health) is a nonprofit organization that is about making sure that the benefits of innovation in science and technology are available to developing countries and remotely located, low-income groups. PATH's mission is to improve the health of people around the world by advancing technology, strengthening health systems, and encouraging healthy behaviors.

The topics that PATH covers include maternal and child health, nutrition, vaccines and immunization, reproductive health, emerging and epidemic diseases like HIV, tuberculosis and malaria. One of PATH's longest standing collaborations is the impactful work that began 20 years ago based on developing a time temperature indicator to determine if a vaccine exposed to enough heat would be rendered ineffective.

PATH's secret to long-term sustainability is its engagement with partners such as local communities, governments, international organizations such as UN specialized agencies, UNICEF, WHO, etc. to achieve their social mission. Owing to its size and scale of operations, PATH does not aspire to be fully self-funded, but leverages a flexible innovation capital, which is 5% to 10% of its annual budget, to attract resources from governments and foundations.

Host Sheela Sethuraman and Dr. Christopher Elias, president and CEO of PATH, talk about the beginnings of PATH and what has been some of their greatest accomplishments and challenges. They also discuss the process, the scalability, and the engagement model of PATH.
